World Bellydance Day - May 12, 2012

"Our mission is to unite the initiative of dancers around the world to celebrate the wonderful art of belly dance as a holiday on the second Saturday in May every year. We got inspired by the idea of holding an event that would serve as a reminder that belly dance is an ART form, a cultural event, a sport, and a social and family entertainment. It is also a wonderful chance to help those in need."
- Lydia Tzigane, Founder

This year to celebrate World Bellydance Day I will be offering two free days of classes on Saturday May 12 and Sunday May 13.

World Bellydance day is about dedicating your event to promoting Bellydance as an art as well as helping your community. We do it for the love of art, not for personal gain or profit.

We will be raising money to support Ahmisa House, which provides emergency pet safehousing, veterinary care, pet-related safety planning, legal advocacy, a 24-hour crisis line, outreach programs, and other services to help the human and animal victims of domestic violence across Georgia reach safety
  • Classes will be offered in 1- hour slots of time on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 & 13, 2012
  • All levels and topics are welcome
  • Private, group and duet classes are welcome
  • Students particpating in classes on these days are asked to make a donation towards our designated charity. We suggest a minimum of $10 per person per hour

The Arab Street: Social Tension & Artistic Inspiration

This year at "The First Dancer's Intensive" I am proud to offer two moderated discussions on relvant topics within the world of Middle Eastern Dance.

Saturday, May 26
1245-145PM
Brown Bag Lunch & Discuss "The Arab Street:Social Tension and Artistic Inspiration"

Sunday, May 27, 2012
1230 – 130 Brown Bag Lunch & Discuss
"The American Dance Landscape: Cabret vs. Tribal"
For my own part, it allows me to share with all of you the two worlds in which I have inhabited for some years now, that of Middle Eastern Dance and Anthropology. As both a working anthropologist and professional dancer, I prefer a street-smart view that questions the motives from which the Dance, as cultural expression is created. This applies not only to my time in the field in Egypt, Lebanon and the U.A.E.  but also here in the United States.

Many of you have already heard me talking about my latest trips to Lebanon and Egypt and some of the ways the Dance is being talked about and performed within popular culture. In our first 'brown bag' discussion, "The Arab Street: Social Tension and Artistic Inspiration", I look forward to sharing some of my own experiences, but plan to offer some directed questions for discussion from the group.

On sunday, we will meet for lunch again and this time, turn the focus to dance within our own country. While it may sound like an invitation to a heated battle,  "The American Dance Landscape: Cabret vs. Tribal" discussion seeks to tease out the social critique that, I think, lies beneath the stylistic surfaces of these seemingly differential camps. The overarching question here will not be "what are the differences" but why do we "perform difference" ? How and why do we do this when we speak about our dance, our reasons for dancing and who can be disignated as "authentic" in their performance of "bellydance".

It is my hope that when dancers engage key social questions within the culture, the outward expression (their dance) will gain depth, relevance and interest. I look forward to jumping head-long into some of these questions with you!

The First Dancer's Intensive!

www.dancersintensiveatlanta.blogspot.com

Yes, of course we have payment plans! But the rates are really pretty awesome if I must say so myself!

I am looking forward to hosting what I hope will be the first in a long line of intensive events. My hope is that this event will transform dancers into the artists they want to be by offering a place to work on the nuts and bolts of both dance/stagecraft.

We spend a great deal of time learning combinations and choreography but not much on the other components of our performance. I hope to take dancers and get them thinking like directors...

More Event And Travel Details To Come!

And yes, I know many have asked about going to Egypt. Hell, I'm ready to get back there just as soon as possible and I miss it everyday. Still, things are shaky and I am not prepared to take students into that situation though I might consider traveling on my own.

Dance friends in the area have alerted me that they are moving their activities to the Red Sea area..not neccessarily Sharm El-Sheik.

Bellydance Show!

February 18, 2012
7:00pm
$5 Entrance
Headliners: Jenny Nichols and Amani Jabril
Guest Performances by: Heleshia McCall, Tamara Rose Dudevoir & Sheri Morgan

Sheri

Lately, in the Atlanta area, I have been finding that it is incredibly difficult to find a restaurant or club gig. Why would I be looking, you might ask? Well, live performance offers something you just can't get in the studio...immediate audience reaction and the physicality of working through a live performance. It also happens to offer a pay check.

I've been happy to get the odd fill-in gig here and there, but it is not filling my dance card the way I would like it to. So...I decided...if nobody will give me a chance, I'll make my own. It is in that spirit, and with the help of my dear friend, Jenny Nichols, that we have created "Hafla!"

Heleshia

Hafla! will offer bi-monthly performance opportunities to professionals and students alike as well as an open dance floor for all to dance and enjoy.

I am hoping to offer a space not simply for fun and performance, but a space designated "safe" for experimentation and "open" for dancers of a variety of shapes, sizes, backgrounds and vision.

Tamara

I hope that you will join us for this and future events. We are looking to do our next one in April. If you and/or your students are interestedin dancing at future events, please contact me now:
